Intercostal pain or intercostal neuralgia – [ICD - 10 - R07.82]
is a pain involving the intercostal nerves, which is known to be very
unpleasant. These nerves are arising from the spinal cord, below the ribs.
Intercostal pain or intercostal neuralgia tends to cause thoracic pain, which
affects the chest wall and upper trunk.

Symptoms:
- Sudden, acute and intense pain
- Stiffness of the chest
- Dyspnea
- Severe pain in the chest wall
- Loss of appetite
- Swelling and cramps
- Intercostal hematoma
Prevention:
- Resting and limiting all physical activities
- Taking pain medications
- Applying ice pack or cold pack, followed by heat therapy
- Physical therapy
- Muscle relaxants for severe pain
